As a Bazaar Spices team member that is surrounded by many healing spices, herbs and botanicals, I am fascinated by the wonders of natural remedies. Recently, I’ve discovered a book that not only my fellow herb nerds would love, but would be great to share in honor of Women’s History Month. It’s called, “Women Healers of the World: The Traditions, History & Geography of Herbal Medicines” by Holly Bellebuono. It is a book that educates its reader while incorporating stories of empowering women.
Holly Bellebuono, herself is an herbalist with several decades of experience, and specializes in women’s health. She is also not only an author, but is the CEO of Bellebuono Holistic International,
which includes The Bellebuono School of Herbal Medicine. In writing her book she took seven years to interview and really get to know these healers throughout the world and their approaches to herbal healing.

Bellebuono guides the reader through sixteen plant-based world healing traditions and thirty women who have practiced them. She provides recipes while touching upon the history, geography and medical heritage of the twenty countries where these healing traditions originated. Many of her ingredients you can find at our shop (such as St. John’s wort., red clover, elderberry and calendula to name a few).
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a unique perspective to natural healing remedies. It is a guide to learning about botanicals and has really helpful recipes. This book honors both the women who were invisible yet vital in medicine for centuries and the women of today who continue devote their lives to spreading these methods of self care that is driven through compassion for our bodies and for our environment.
